Flood waters threaten City’s Northwest side
May 13, 2014

The North Branch of the Chicago River is threatening homes in the city’s Albany Park neighborhood, where the river is close to flood stage.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning until Tuesday evening with the North Branch of the Chicago River likely to rise above flood stage late Tuesday afternoon.

Resident are keeping a nervous eye on the river, throwing down sandbags to minimize the damage.

The river is expected to rise to 7.1 ft and the slowly start to subside.

Unfortunately, this section on the city’s Northwest side experiences flooding problems almost every Spring.

There could be some relief on the way. In 2013, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District announced plans for a $60 million tunnel to divert flood waters during major weather events, but theproject is still in the design phase.

No word yet when the project will break ground.
